The NSW Rural Fire Service provides details on hazard reduction

Your local Rural Fire Service should be contacted before lighting any fires.
If you are fighting a fire or preparing for fire you need to cover all bare skin with non-flammable clothing (cotton or wool is good). You'll also need sturdy work boots wide brimmed or hardhat, goggles and gloves.
If you are caught the safest place is inside a building away from heat, hot air and flames. A fire will usually pass in a few minutes. If you are unable to get inside a house being inside a car is better than being in the open.
